چکیده

Most efforts aimed at reducing the costs of video-ondemand services have focussed on reducing the cost of distributing the top ten to twenty videos by broadcasting them in a periodic fashion rather than waiting for individual requests. Unfortunately nearly all existing VOD broadcasting protocols require client set-top boxes (STB) to include enough local storage to store up to 55 percent of each video being viewed. Here we present a novel VOD broadcasting protocol that does not make that demand. Our Dual Broadcasting protocol can accommodate clients who do not have any storage device in their STB while providing a much lower maximum waiting time to customers whose STB includes a disk drive. We also discuss two possible extensions to this new protocol. One of them is aimed at reducing the bandwidth requirements of the protocol while the other extends the functionality of the VOD service by providing reverse and fast forward controls.

RF DACs simplify power and space in downstream cable transmitter systems

Cable service providers are upgrading their distribution systems to stay ahead of the increased consumer demand for data. The nature of the transmission systems is evolving from a multi-cast system, where all subscribers are sent the same signal, to a combined multi-cast and narrowcast system, where some content is shared by all subscribers, and some content is directed to a particular subscrib...

Tradeoff between system profit and user delay/loss in providing near video-on-demand service

In a near video-on-demand (near-VOD) system, requests for a movie arriving in a period of time are grouped (or “batched”) together and served with a single multicast stream. In this paper, we consider providing near-VOD services when there is a cost associated with using a network multicast channel. We address the tradeoff between system profit, given by the total pay-per-view collected minus t...

Secure Pay-Per-View Testbed

Trials of Video on Demand and Pay-Per-View systems are underway in many countries, and as a result, many cable and telecommunications companies are having to upgrade or replace their distribution networks. Video streams must be secure in order to prevent unauthorized viewing of the programs being transmitted, yet most existing security systems do not make use of the potential for bi-directional...

MICROCAST: Smart Card Based (Micro)Pay-per-View for Multicast Services

With the increased availability of broadband fixed and mobile communications, multicast content delivery can be expected to become a very important market. Especially for wireless multicast delivery, it is important that payment collection be fine-grain: the customer should pay only for the content that she actually consumes. This can be achieved by using pay-per-view based on micropayments. Th...

An Alternative Paradigm for Scalable On-Demand Applications: Evaluating and Deploying the Interactive Multimedia Jukebox

ÐStraightforward, one-way delivery of audio/video through television sets has existed for many decades. In the 1980s, new services like pay-per-view and video-on-demand were touted as the akiller applicationso for interactive TV. However, the hype quickly died away, leaving only hard technical problems and costly systems. As an alternative, we propose a new jukebox paradigm offering flexibility...
